The Initial Letter
As I enter the ninth grade, I am nervous yet passionate about what is to come. I was unsure whether or not to join leadership so I decided to attend the interview. Now, as you can see, I have been accepted into this amazing class. I was very excited when I found out that I have been accepted. However, I was still unsure whether this was for me or not. Then came our first zoom meeting, I instantly felt that I was comfortable with this group of people. Entering this school year would be different from last year. The last few years had been hard but we adapted to the change. This school year I expect to be more hands-on and exciting because well, it’s my first year of high school. I do expect there to be challenges, however, and darker times. But even after the worst storms, the sun will shine again. I must make the most of those dark times and use them as a weapon to see the light again. I’ll want to quit, give up, and regret my decisions. But I must be mentally strong and persevere. Being my first year, I have been confused about some assignments or just what to do. So I reached out to my older peers, and they are extremely helpful in providing everything I need. With much to be completed throughout the year, this helpfulness is crucial. As the year progresses, I understand that I will have to take on new responsibilities and limit my laziness to none. There will always be deadlines to make and tasks to do. This year will be hard but with the amazing leadership team, anything is possible. Ultimately, I want to develop my leadership skills, I also want to develop myself as a better person. I wish to make myself a great influence on others and spread positivity throughout the school and make my mark on Ripon High. Most of all, I want to help others that are in need and I want to help people excel in whatever they are struggling in. I want to make people feel welcomed, just as how my leadership team has done to me.

“Often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.”
-Hellen Keller
This quote really resonated with me because it brings a new perspective to me. Sometimes in life, we are so focused on one thing that we forget about another. It’s as if we have blinders on and only see what’s ahead. Helen Keller is essentially saying not to get too caught up in things that don’t matter anymore. Be considerate, and open to the opportunities that life may bring. Be an open-minded person, that can take feedback on what to do. To truly become the person I want to be, I must be open-minded and prone to opportunities that life throws at me.
“Power comes not from knowledge kept but from the knowledge shared.”
― Bill Gates
For me, I like to think knowledge is a key factor in life. Knowledge will guide you in the right ways and teach you. Some knowledge is found on your own, some of it is from others. Power and knowledge hold extreme importance and responsibility. However, the most powerful and important knowledge comes from others. You learn from other people more than you learn from yourself. Their knowledge is just as good or even better than yours. Bill Gates is essentially saying that people’s opinions as just as powerful and influential as yours.
“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
― Oscar Wilde
This quote really impacted me because envy feasts upon people. People get caught up wanting to be someone they’re not. Oscar Wilde is telling people that it’s perfectly fine to be yourself and show that. You can’t be someone other than yourself for they are already taken. They are busy doing their own thing, so you should be doing your own too. The main reason why this quote really speaks to me is you are your own character. You need to write your own story and book. Don’t plagiarize and use someone else’s words with yours. Be yourself.
Goals Part One
Coming into the leadership program as a freshman has been a little difficult. However, I have set myself short and long-term goals. Setting reasonable and reachable goals is crucial in developing you as a person. It also helps with determination and striving to be a better person. To start, I wish to discuss my short-term goals. This year, as a freshman, I want to impact many people with positivity. Being a freshman in high school is very scary and overwhelming. I hope I can talk to the right people and bring them up with encouragement. Being the World’s Greatest High School, everyone should be and feel included. The second short-term goal of mine is being a good role model. There are many questions people out there on campus that can influence someone the wrong way. Being a good role model, I can direct that person in the right direction. If someone feels lost they should be able to count on me to do the right thing. To begin with my long-term goals, I wish to excel academically and attend a prestigious university. Stanford would be absolutely amazing to attend. At Stanford, I would wish to study medicine. My second long term goal would be to be successful. After all of my many years of schooling, I would want to be a extremely successful person. I wish to provide for my family and let my mom and dad retire. One of my goals for the leadership program is to have everything, or most things, be successful. I feel as if that despite thinking that everything is under control, something will go South. I think that it would be amazing if everything went planned. My second goal for the Leadership Program is to make Morty happy. The reason why my second goal is to make Morty happy is because she always seems very stressed out, however, I want to make her proud and happy.

Quote Part II
“Sometimes life is about risking everything for a dream that no one can see but yourself.” Anonymous. I resonate with this quote because I believe strongly in big dreams and trying your best to work towards them. I personally have the dream of going to Stanford, and majoring in CS. It really has been a dream of mine since grade school, and it will be extremely hard to achieve, however I believe in myself, and maybe one day I will attend there. I really live by this quote because, in everything I do I try my best and even when I am being doubted, I continue to persevere, through all the diversity. For instance, in a sport such as track and field. I always try my best to PR, and work really hard to try to get better at what I do. I have also taken from this quote that you will most definitely face challenges, and people that are praying for your downfall. However, you just really need to keep your head up. Only YOU truly know what you are capable of, so don’t listen to all of the people telling you what to do. Do what drives you, and what you are passionate about. Follow your heart.
Goals Part 2
Positivity. My first short term goal was to impact as many people as I could with positivity. I feel that this goal has been achieved but not to its maximum. I haven’t really gone out of my way to talk to people I don’t know, and I think I should probably try to do that. I want people to remember me one day as the kid who picked them up from a dark day. I have tried to make small talk with some people in my classes that I have never seen. For instance, Forest. He is a kind hearted person in my PE class that I have never seen before. So I decided to talk to him, and now I consider us friends. Being a good role model. In my classes that I have I try to be the kid that is always on top of his work and is a leader. I try to lead by example and show people the way. I think I can improve on my role model skills a little bit because when I am with my friends I find myself in a zone where I am not better than everyone else, but cooler I suppose. I really need to try to expand myself, and reach out of my comfort zone. My long term goals of excelling academically, and going to a prestigious university are coming along. I have maintained my 4.0 GPA and I hope that I get at least a 4 on my APHG exam. That will boost my grade up to an A in his class and I will achieve a 4.12 GPA which would be fantastic. My dream of going to Stanford is a little ways away. I still need to keep my grades up, but get more involved in my communities. I originally wanted to study something along the lines of medicine, but I am leaning more towards computer science. I still have the dream of being able to retire my parents, and strive towards it. My two leadership goals, having the events go well and making Morty happy have gone great I believe. Every event that leadership has put on has gone great. I think that only one that didn’t go as smoothly would have to be the Halloween dance, but come on we are Freshman. Excuses aside, we still made a lot of money and it went well. Making Morty happy, I feel I could do more, to make her feel more relaxed. But today I did volunteer and cut some of the tickets out, and am trying to get more involved in the program because I find myself very soft spoken. But I have done all that is being asked of me and I hope that that has pleased Morty.
The Magazine Cover
People Magazine Article.
Nathan Gaines the Freshman Representative for Ripon High this year. Freshman year is probably one of the most intimidating years of high school, and is arguably one of the most important years. However, Nathan Gaines is ready for anything and is ready to conquer this year. He is taking one AP class and two honors classes. Being a Freshman Representative, he must set a very good example, and be an excellent role model. Being a good role model is definitely what his class needs considering they aren't the most respectful.
When Nathan is out of school he is playing football. This is his first year playing contact football and is enjoying it so far. I am constantly learning new things and making new friends. Football is, in a way, a happy place for him. He is escaping worrying about grades and test, and is enjoying life. However, Nathan Gaines really looks forward to playing soccer for Ripon High. Soccer is his main sport and really enjoys playing it.
Outside of sports, Nathan really enjoys learning about computers. He is striving towards a profession that involves using computer and AI to solve problems. He really wants to be a software engineer, like his uncle. He wants to attend Stanford University, and earn his degree in a STEAM major. His biggest dream is to live in the Silicon Valley, and hopes he can achieve that one day.

Portfolio Page 8: My Role Model
Someone I see as my role model and someone that has made a positive impact on my life would have to be my Orthodontist and cousin, Lyndon Low. He shows extreme qualities of leadership and determination. Lyndon is a person who has changed my life in some aspects, and I am grateful for that. Lyndon gives excellent advice and is very whimsical. He has many great accomplishments too, such as, attending UCLA to get his Masters’s degree. Before attending UCLA, he enrolled at UOP and was the Valedictorian of his class. Lyndon has retired from his Orthodontics practice and is now a professor at UOP. Lyndon is the father of three children. One of his boys is a Lawyer in New York, another child is studying to become a doctor, and the last son works in hospitality. Lyndon still gives back to the community. For example, he participated in giving Covid-19 vaccinations at various clinics in his community. Lyndon Low is a very influential person that I aspire to be. I am also interested in the orthodontic practice. He has given me helpful tips about college and about the path to be an orthodontist. Whenever I see Lyndon he just makes my day better and makes me a lot happier and motivates me to be like him. Lyndon is overall just a great person and I aspire to be like him.
Portfolio Page 9: My Inner Animal
My inner animal, or an animal that can be used to describe me, would probably have to be a Fox. Foxes are relatively friendly unless provoked, which reminds me of myself. They enjoy being alone and like to keep to themselves. At home, sometimes I just want to be alone and have some “me” time. Foxes are also very strategic and very intelligent creatures. I think I am decently smart, however, I love strategy. Foxes have many different ways of capturing their prey. I have many different ways and methods of studying for tests. In various games, I also have some pretty strategic skills. Foxes can be very mischievous and sneaky. I too can be very mischievous and sneaky. I don’t like to be sneaky and mischievous in a bad way, but I will be when I am playing sports. I like to be unpredictable and sneaky. For example in soccer, I will kinda lay off a person and when they are passed the ball, I will pounce and steal it. Foxes are also extremely playful, and nocturnal. I like to play games, and I am a semi-night owl. I am the opposite of a morning person and hate mornings. However, the night is where I strive, I feel as if I am more productive during the evening. Like foxes, I like to aid others and I want to help people until they don’t need the help anymore.

Lyrics: Yesterday by The Beatles.
All my troubles seemed so far away
Now it looks as though they're here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Suddenly
I'm not half the man I used to be
There's a shadow hangin' over me
Oh, yesterday came suddenly
Why she had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday
Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Why she had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say
I said something wrong, now I long for yesterday
Yesterday
Love was such an easy game to play
Now I need a place to hide away
Oh, I believe in yesterday
Mm mm mm mm mm mm mm
Life can be extremely challenging at times, there are many detrimental events that happen to us and we often can’t move on from them. For example, a heartbreak. This can be very hard to move on from, however, if you don’t move on then you’re still living in the past. If you’re living in the past, you are essentially going nowhere and just thinking about something you can’t change the outcome too. This song illustrates how they are just wanting to revisit the past but they can’t. They are just longing and holding onto what has already happened. They are striving to go back to yesterday. In life we as humans must learn how to move on in life. I too find myself in this position. For example, when my grandpa died. This was a sudden event that took me and my family by great surprise. I was destroyed emotionally because he was my best friend. However, I knew that he would just want me to be happy so I attempted to move on in life doing things that would make him proud.

Section 14
One of my most favorite leadership memories would have to be when we did our secret Santa. The secret Santa was really fun and you got a gift or two. You can’t really complain about that. Despite being a little embarrassed that day, it was exhilarating. My second most favorite leadership memory would be when we decorated our homecoming float. We did stay up decently late, but it was a real bonding experience. While it was very energetically demoralizing, we spent time together and it was a really joyful time. What made it such a memory was probably that I was hanging out with a different group of people. Most of my peers are from different schools and I am used to hanging out with people from my school. So hanging out with my leadership peers exposed me to a new environment. My third favorite leadership memory would be the day where we set up the booth thing to sell t-shirts. This was during the summer time, and my freshman class had just met each other. However, I instantly felt welcomed. Spencer was really nice to me and informed me on what was happening and what to expect. He was extremely helpful to me and made me feel like I belonged.
Section 15
One person I would like to give a huge shout out to would have to be Spencer. The story I would like to tell begins with the day of door decorations. I had Spencer in my group and keep in mind the winter formal dance took place the day before this. The dance ends at 11pm and takes at least an hour to clean up. So Spencer was up to at least 12 pm. Then the very next day, we had to decorate every single door on campus. Also, he had to get to school even earlier than most of us because he had to wait for the tent people to take the tents they used for winter formal. The tent people were also late so Spencer had to walk back and forth checking if they had come. Once they finally did come, Spencer had to spend the rest of his afternoon assisting his group decorating the assigned doors. I thought that this story of Spencer truly shows how unselfish and giving he is.

Portfolio Section 18: What I Love to D0.
I have a few hobbies and most of them just consist of extra curricular activities. For instance track. This is my first year of track, and so far I am enjoying it. There is a ton of running, as expected, but the reason why I like it so much is because it is a relatively relaxed sport where you get to chill out and hang with your friends for the majority of the time. I have also played soccer this year. The team wasn’t the best but soccer is a sport that I love, and I met a lot of cool kids that are now some of my friends. Another thing I got out of it was I learned some Spanish, and now I would like to think that Spanish 1 is a little bit easier. Youtube is something that I love to do because in my free time, or when I am procrastinating, I find myself on there watching videos on the various video games I am currently playing. I put a picture of Hawaii’s sunset because I love to travel, and it is my favorite thing to do. We have been taking a Hawaii trip every year since around 2020 I would say, and it is always extremely fun. Lastly, I put a picture of my family because I love them with all of my heart, and one of my hobbies is just to simply spend some quality time with them.
Portfolio Section 19: Letter to Parents
Dear Mom and Dad,
Throughout the entirety of my life, I am very grateful to say that I have had the luxury of having the support, guidance, and unconditional love of my parents. No matter what I was going through, or what was happening to me they have always been there. I could not be any more grateful than I already am for having these amazing people in my life.
My mother is one of the most caring people on this planet. She has made an absurd amount of sacrifices for my brother and I. Each day she has to take care of us and sacrifice her time just so my brother and I can be happy. She has molded me into the person I am today, and without her positive influence in my life, I don’t know where I would be today. I know that I can talk to her about anything, and she’ll always be there for me.
My father is one of the most influential and wise people I know. Despite him being a little hard on me sometimes, he has molded me into the person that I am today. He has taught me many things such as working on cars, and other sorts of machinery. He has taught me about the outdoors and how to be independent. I am so grateful for him, and all of which he has taught me. He is someone that I deeply trust, and someone I can talk to about anything. I know that he will always be there for me, and is someone I can count on.
Love,
Nathan

Page 20: Advice
Going into Freshman Year is something completely different that you are used to. There is a ton of responsibility, and you are basically on your own now. You have to adapt with minimal guidance. You will have to try new things and talk to different people. The mentor that is given to you will teach you the ropes of highschool, and you will learn a lot from them. The first piece of advice I would give is making good bonds and relationships with your peers. Making these connections will pay off in the long run because they will be more open to help you and teach you many things. Second piece of advice is do not procrastinate. Procrastination will be your downfall. Just because you are a Freshman doesn’t mean that you won’t have work. Freshman year is difficult because you have to get acclimated to the environment that you are in. I still procrastinate and don’t start things until when they are almost due, but I have maintained a 4.0 GPA. Just stay on top of your work, and don’t get lazy and push things aside. There have been many close encounters of having a B and many situations where I get close to no sleep. My third piece of advice is consinstany. Be consistent. Be someone that people can depend on, and have consistent grades. The little things matter and if you desire to get into a good college, then pay attention to your grades, and be consistent with them. Also make new friends. Most of the friends that you are going to make are going to be some of the realist people out there you know.
Page 21: Do's and Don'ts
Do’s
- Communicate and Build good habits.
- Be proactive and planned out.
- Stay organized with the paperwork, and work with your peers. They are there for a reason
- Enjoy the year and the memories that will be made.
- Be open to learn new things, and expand your knowledge of yourself and the student body.
- Don’t procrastinate and wait last minute to do things
- Rush your work and make it look very sloppy.
- Don’t do things that you have no ideas about
- Do not over think and stress out over events. Not everything in the world is perfect.
- Be quiet and never ask questions. Interact with the class.

Portfolio Page 24: The Professional
Two aspects that were discussed throughout the year so far that have developed me as a leader would have to be the book studies, and the speech. First, the book studies have helped shape me as a leader because there are constant ways in the chapter that help the reader excel in the professional world. For example, the chapter is on the back burner. It brought a whole new perspective to me of how to forget about things, but not forget about things. It taught me how to manage my time, and focus on what is important, and what can be done later. There are a lot of chapters in the book that are focused on de-stressing life, and just forgetting bad things. The second aspect would be the speech. It helped shape me as a leader because it had broken my fear of public speaking. In the professional world, I can infer that there is a lot of public speaking involved no matter what profession. So by doing that, it had broken my fear of public speaking, so now whenever I have to present something, I am not afraid to. I also have an edge on people now because I have the experience of formally talking to a crowd of people. That experience is not something that every person is accessible to.
Portfolio Page 25: Change
Being my first year in leadership, and in high school, this year has been very enjoyable. However, more importantly, it has been a year of change. Being in high school, there is a ton of reasonability that is required. Being in leadership has taught some qualities that have made high school run extremely smoothly. For instance, leadership requires a lot of work, and to cope with that work you need to know how to manage time effectively, and not procrastinate. A keynote that I have taken from this year is learning from everything that happens, even if it is positive. A time of frustration would have to be when I find myself overflowing with work despite already having notice. I would just put things on the backburner, and forget about them. As a result, I would have to do everything last minute and receive an unwanted amount of stress. This also goes along the lines of lack of efficiency. In a time when I should be productive instead, I would find myself on my phone watching Tik Tok, playing Clash Royale, or on Instagram. I constantly struggle with procrastination, and my mental strength is weak compared to some of the people I know. I believe that time management is my biggest flaw, however, I love to manage my time. Ironic. I have been able to combat these addictions by simply deleting the app. I have deleted tik tok many times, and it has worked flawlessly. I strive towards doing it more when I am sick and tired of delaying things. I think one positive change that should be made in the classroom is more strict on slacking off and being off task. I feel like a blatant call-out may be a little harsh, but if that is what it takes, then so be it. By doing this I think that most of the class would realize what they are supposed to do, and not mess around because they are faced with the consequence of being called out, and no one likes to be called out. Maybe to solve this problem each student starts with a budget amount of points every month. Every time they are caught slacking off x amount of points are deducted, and it is for a grade.
Page 26: Ideal Leader
The perfect leader is one that knows when to step up when the situation calls for it, but acknowledges when others know more than you about the task and coordinates with them accordingly. In order to be a leader, you must put others ahead of yourself for the best. Leaders need to have confidence, so when they tell you to do something, it is them being honorable, and having a voice that can be heard. Leadership embodies putting others first before themselves. When you are told something it shows their strength and confidence. Leaders need to make the hard decisions and know what to do when the inevitable problems arise. In the leadership program, students should lead by example and refrain from speaking over another leader. Especially someone of high authority. In the beginning of class the leaders will go straight to check and respond to their emails. They will also work on their journal.
